WHAT ARE STRAND JACKS?
A strand jack is a hydraulic linear winch that lifts, lowers or pulls very heavy loads using a bundle of steel strands. A large hollow hydraulic cylinder extends and retracts while top and bottom anchors take turns locking onto the strands, much like pulling a rope hand over hand. Strand jacks need far less space than cranes, lift with great precision, and can be controlled together from one position. They are widely used for bridges, ports, offshore and power plant projects and large-scale plant maintenance.

STRAND JACK SPECIFICATIONS
📘 What Is a Strand Jack?
A strand jack is a type of linear winch system that pulls heavy loads from above using multiple steel strands passing through a hollow hydraulic cylinder.
The main cylinder can extend and retract as much as 600 mm (23.6 in) per stroke, depending on the model.
Top and bottom mini-jacks with wedge anchors lock and unlock the strands in sequence, so the load moves smoothly up or down stroke by stroke.
⭐ Key Features & Benefits of Strand Jacks
Strand jacks combine heavy capacity with precise control.
Huge capacity
Up to about 1,405 tons per jack, and jacks can be grouped for more.
Long travel
Lifts of 90 m and horizontal moves of 250 m completed.
Precision
Fine adjustment for setting weld gaps or bolting steelwork.
Load holding
Load held mechanically at any point in the stroke.
Remote control
Fully computerized lifting and lowering available.
All attitudes
Works vertically, horizontally and at any angle.
🔧 Strand Jack Components
A strand jack system includes:
• Main hollow hydraulic cylinder
• Top and bottom mini-jacks with anchor systems
• Replaceable strand wedges
• Integrated strand guide and guide tubes
• Counter-balance valve for load holding and lowering
• Chair (base) fixed to the support
• Hydraulic power pack and control system
🏗️ Common Applications for Strand Jacks
Strand jacks are commonly used for:
• Bridge span lifting and lowering
• Heavy lifting at ports and shipyards
• Offshore module and topside installation
• Power plant and refinery component lifts
• Roof and large structure lifting
• Skidding and horizontal pulling
• Tower and stadium construction
📈 Advantages of Strand Jacks
Compared with cranes, strand jacks offer:
Small footprint
Work in confined sites and inside structures.
Precise movement
Millimeter-level control of the load.
Safety
Fail-safe gripping and pre-set overload protection.
Scalability
Use singly, in pairs or in groups for any capacity.
Cost efficiency
Often cheaper than very large cranes for heavy lifts.
⚠️ Limitations to Plan For
Strand jack lifts need careful engineering. Plan for:
• Lifting structure or Towerlift support towers
• Strand length for the full lift height
• Load distribution between jacks
• Power pack capacity and lifting speed
• Wedge condition and lubrication
• Monitoring and control system layout
• A detailed lift plan reviewed by engineers

Renting Strand Jacks from WB Equipment
Strand jacks are often needed for a single heavy lift, so renting a complete system is usually the most cost-effective option. WB Equipment rents Enerpac strand jacks from 17 to over 1,400 tons per jack, together with hydraulic power packs, strand, anchors, guides and control systems.
Equipment is checked and tested before it ships, and we help plan the number of jacks, the strand configuration and the controls for your load and lift height.
Where Are Strand Jacks Used?
Strand jacks handle loads too heavy or awkward for cranes, including:
● Bridge construction: lifting and lowering spans, segments and girders.
● Lifting from structures: raising roofs, modules and plant from above.
● Skidding and pulling: moving heavy loads horizontally into position.
● Offshore and ports: lifting decks, modules and cargo in confined areas.
● Power and industrial plants: installing boilers, vessels and generators.
Because the strand can be very long, one setup can lift or lower a load through great heights with precise control.
Your Questions Answered - Strand Jacks
What is a strand jack?
A hydraulic linear winch that lifts, lowers or pulls heavy loads using steel strands gripped by wedge anchors.
How does a strand jack work?
The main cylinder extends and retracts while top and bottom anchors alternately lock onto the strands, moving the load stroke by stroke like pulling a rope hand over hand.
What capacities are available?
Enerpac strand jacks range from about 17 to 1,405 tons (150 to 12,500 kN) per jack.
Why use a strand jack instead of a crane?
Strand jacks need a much smaller footprint and give more precise control, and several jacks can be run together from one control point.
How high can a strand jack lift?
Lift height depends only on strand length. Lifts of 90 m and horizontal moves of 250 m have been completed.
What happens if a hose fails?
A counter-balance valve holds the load, and the load is held mechanically by the wedges whenever movement stops.
What are strand jack wedges?
Hardened wedges that grip the strands. They lock and unlock hydraulically and are replaceable consumables.
What is Towerlift?
A modular heavy-duty support tower system used to carry strand jacks where no permanent structure is available.
Can strand jacks move loads horizontally?
Yes. They work in any attitude from vertical to horizontal, including skidding operations.
How are multiple strand jacks synchronized?
Power packs with matched flow outlets and computer control keep all jacks moving at the same speed.
Can I rent strand jacks?
Yes. WB Equipment rents strand jack systems with power packs and controls.
Do you provide lift support?
Yes. Our team helps with lift planning, setup and operation.
